A useful starting point
An ingredient list may include an item whose use is not obvious until later in the method. Conversely, the method can refer to a prepared component that the short list does not explain. Resolve those questions before starting to mix or cook.
Keep it in your kitchen notes
Tick each ingredient as you find its role in the method. Note whether some of it is reserved for a later step. If the recipe is inconsistent, consult its author or choose a clearer recipe rather than inventing a quantity. Keep your notes beside the original so a later edit does not obscure what the published instructions actually said.
